Update/Reminders: Week of May 3, 2021

We welcomed in the warmer spring weather with a popsicle break outside near the pond, one of our favorite places to visit! A big thank you to Mrs. Vaiana for supplying us with this cool treat to enjoy! 💜

Here’s what we’ve been studying in Fourth Grade!

Math: Unit 8: Geometry –  We are well on our way with Unit 8, all about geometry. The class seems to really enjoy this new way of thinking and looking at math (and especially loves measuring angles with a protractor)! Your child’s Unit 7 test arrived home this past week. The class gained a good understanding of fractions!

Reading/Writing: We have read a number of short stories and articles and are growing our ability to restate the questions being asked when writing a constructed response, along with thinking about  how to incorporate evidence to support our answers.

Important Information and Reminders:

*M-STEP:  Fourth graders will take the M-STEP this week, Tuesday May 4 and also Tuesday May 11.  During this time, please encourage your child to eat a healthy breakfast and keep a routine bedtime. Just a reminder, please refrain from scheduling any appointments during these testing dates. Thank you.

*Early Release Day: We will dismiss at 12:15pm on Friday, May 21.

*Book & Reading Log: Please remind your child to return their book & reading log EACH day to school.  They will have an opportunity to read during their Individualized Reading Time. I like to periodically touch base to listen to the children read and see if they have selected a “good fit” book.

*Homework: Reading: Read a minimum of 30 minutes every night.  Remember to log the time and pages on your reading log and return it to school each day. Math: 2 pages, twice a week.

I wish you a wonderful start to the month of May!

March is Reading Month: It has been a fun month of reading wrapped around a Wild West theme! I love seeing the students excited to bring their reading calendars to school each week with pride of the number of minutes they have read. 🙂 Each week, students have had the opportunity to earn a raffle ticket for a chance to win a new book!  A big thank you to our PTC for sponsoring the prize books, along with the fun weekly snacks each Wednesday! Congratulations to our very own Lily for being a reading raffle book winner!!! 🙂

There was also an exciting school-wide western themed door decoration competition that took place and our fourth grade class won for the 4/5 hallway! The prize will be a pizza party and will take place after spring break on Friday, April 16! Our class is very excited and cannot wait!! 🙂 I am very proud of the creative planning and collaborative work that each student put into our door decor. Well done fourth graders!! 🙂

Reading: We just completed our Historical Fiction unit and enjoy our class read aloud titled, Number the Stars, by Lois Lowry, very much! We have shared great conversations and enjoyed making connections between books and characters, finding commonalities and parallels during the the WWII time period.
